Manuscript Critique

This service offers an overall critique of the manuscript, including plot, story, writing style, character development, and other basic elements of fiction-writing craft. Feedback consists mainly of written evaluation and suggestions for improvement of these areas. Recommended for early drafts of a manuscript.

$2 per page.

FICTION SERVICES

Line Edit

This service offers a line-by-line edit of plot and character development, writing voice, point of view, specific wording choice, and other structural and craft elements. This edit is also recommended for earlier drafts of a manuscript with the expectation that significant rewriting and revision will follow, which would make close attention to grammatical errors pointless.

$4 per page.

Combination Edit

This service combines the Line Edit and Copy Edit. The potential downside to a combination edit is that the line edit typically is done with the expectation that there will be some revision to follow (after implementing the edits to plot and character development, etc.), so the client potentially is not getting a copy edit of the final material. This is only recommended for manuscripts that are already very polished.

$6 per page.

“I had served as the editor of our state academy’s professional newsletter, and our organization decided to employ a company to help us on a part-time basis with getting a quality newsletter produced in a timely manner. Ms. Stephanie Ricker served as a copy editor, coming up with wonderful ideas for new items, and writing with a high level of proficiency. She was a quick study, and learned about our profession by performing in-depth research on the issues involved. Stephanie was very organized, and kept us on track for all of the deadlines. Her attention to detail assisted us and was facilitiative to our need for someone to drive the timelines. She gave us gentle reminders, with perfect timing, such that our job was accomplished efficiently and smoothly.”

"I had the pleasure of working with Stephanie on four fairy tale retellings.  Each story grew progressively better because of her advice.  As a blind individual, I greatly appreciated her willingness to discuss the way sighted individuals see.  These discussions enabled me to revise certain scenes in order to make them more plausible to a sighted reader. Most importantly, Stephanie’s candor in pointing out illogical inconsistencies in plot and character was a tremendous help. ...If you are seeking honest feedback and encouragement, Stephanie is an editor who will not disappoint.  I look forward to working with her again in the future."
